Knowing what types of spearfishing gear you should own is essential to your spearfishing success. Unlike some other sports spearfishing can be dangerous when using substandard or worn out equipment. Below I explain which gear needs the most attention and how to properly maintain your spearfishing gear.

What Spare Spearfishing Gear Should You Pack?

Speargun / Hand-spear rubbers
Due to sunlight and wear and tear the rubbers of spearguns and hand-spears start to deteriorate. You will know this is happening by looking closely at the rubbers. The color of the rubber starts to fade from the sunlight. Upon close investigation you will see small cracks starting to form on the rubber surface. This is when you should change the rubber, or at the very least be sure to keep some spare rubbers with you.

Bridles / Wishbones
Wishbones, especially the thin ones will eventually break, unfortunately it is very difficult to know when this is going to happen. It's best to keep a spare wishbone on hand just to be safe.

I recommend using a Dyneema bridle instead of a wishbone, for two reasons. Firstly they do last longer than the thinner wishbones. Secondly you can see the wear on a Dyneema bridle so you have some idea how much life is left in it. Be sure to carry some extra Dyneema in your spearfishing bag just in case.

Shooting line
It is hard to know when your shooting line is going to break, it can be very unpredictable. A big fish can break it instantly, so having spare shooting line is essential. Be sure to look for wear on the line and replace before you get in the water.

Speargun Shafts
It is good to have at least 2 or 3 spare shafts with you when spearfishing. Speargun shafts get bent easily when hitting rocks or when fighting big pelagic fish.
